Construction Centre calls for calm amid credit crunch - 15-05-2008 - 18:13
Construction Centre calls for calm amid credit crunch An objective approach to the affect of the construction industry by the credit crunch has been urged.

The Construction Centre said despite economic figures the UK is still suffering from a housing shortage and 20 million new homes are scheduled to be built in the UK by 2020.

It did acknowledge the skills shortage in the construction sector needs to be addressed and claimed training and the promotion of construction jobs is essential to meet the government's 2020 housing target.

Richard Simmons, managing director of The Construction Centre, said he believed the media has overemphasised the state of the economy and is making householders unduly concerned.

He added: "Taking a proactive approach to the skills issue within the construction sector is an essential part of ensuring the economy revives and secures a healthy housing market for the future."

McCarthy & Stone, however, recently claimed a proposed construction jobs cull was necessary because of the economic situation.

The Telegraph recently reported the firm McCarthy & Stone is set to cut ten per cent of its staff.
