Engineering jobs 'must be recognised' - 15-05-2008 - 10:40
Engineering jobs 'must be recognised' The building services industry must ensure those in engineering jobs and their work is properly recognised, it has been claimed.

Speakers at the Chartered Institute of Building and Services Engineers annual conference said the work of engineers can go unnoticed when buildings are running smoothly.

However, growing industry profile should lead to the achievements of those in engineering jobs becoming more visible, it was suggested.

A panel discussion at the conference focused on the issue of sustainability, which is emerging as a major sector issue.

The need to deal with energy, materials, waste and water is likely to increase as climate change impacts.

David Frise, chairman of M&E Sustainability, claimed this means "building services consultants will become a highly valued resource".

The call to recognise those in building services engineering jobs comes after a Trade Unions Congress commission urged more protection for those in construction jobs.

It claimed many employees are not properly recognised legally and are suffering from few statutory rights, as well as missing out on benefits.
